From Genesis 3 onward, we see that the root of humanity's perceived separation from God is not the rejection of God, but the rejection of self. Eve did not reject God in the Garden. Instead, she questioned and rejected herself, and that self-imposed distance created the illusion of separation from a God who never left. “The Fall,” then — and what Jesus’ incarnation came to restore — was fundamentally a crisis of identity. When we reject ourselves, we reject God.
